Background of the Study

Mental health awareness is crucial for adolescents, as they are often exposed to stress, peer pressure, and other challenges that can lead to mental health issues. In Borno State, the aftermath of the Boko Haram insurgency has further exacerbated mental health concerns, with many young people facing trauma and displacement. Despite the importance of mental health, awareness and support for mental health issues among adolescents remain inadequate in many Nigerian schools, including those in Borno State. This study aims to assess the level of mental health awareness among secondary school students in Borno State, focusing on their understanding of mental health disorders, coping strategies, and available support systems.

Statement of the Problem

Mental health issues among adolescents in Borno State have been compounded by the ongoing conflict and instability in the region. However, there is limited focus on mental health education within school curricula, leaving students ill-prepared to recognize and manage mental health challenges. Without proper mental health education and support, many adolescents may struggle with untreated mental health conditions, leading to poor academic performance, substance abuse, and other negative outcomes. This study seeks to evaluate the extent of mental health awareness among secondary school students and identify gaps in the provision of mental health education in Borno State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of mental health awareness among secondary school students in Borno State.
  2. To identify the factors that influence mental health awareness among adolescents in Borno State.
  3. To evaluate the availability and accessibility of mental health support services in schools in Borno State.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of mental health awareness among secondary school students in Borno State?
  2. What are the factors influencing mental health awareness among adolescents in Borno State?
  3. What mental health support services are available in secondary schools in Borno State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Secondary school students in Borno State have limited awareness of mental health issues and disorders.
  2. Socio-cultural factors significantly influence mental health awareness among adolescents in Borno State.
  3. The lack of accessible mental health support services in secondary schools contributes to the underreporting and untreated mental health conditions among students.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on secondary school students across both urban and rural areas in Borno State. Limitations include the potential stigma surrounding mental health issues, which may affect students' willingness to disclose their experiences or acknowledge their knowledge gaps.

Definitions of Terms

  • Mental Health Awareness: The understanding and recognition of mental health issues, including knowledge of common disorders, their symptoms, and available treatments.
  • Adolescents: Individuals aged between 10 and 19 years, a critical period for the development of mental health conditions.
  • Mental Health Support Services: Programs or facilities providing psychological support, counseling, and treatment for mental health issues in educational settings.
